I think this video is great, it explains why you suolhd start traditionally first and move into digital. Personally I am not much of a traditional artist, I just really liked to draw character ideas I had for video games in high school and once I started attending college I had realized that I had barely scratched the surface. Even more so once I found friends who liked to paint digitally and I started working towards a degree in graphic design. I actually feel that digital painting/drawing is a good way to start your interest in art simply because you can draw/doodle/paint without spending lots of money on art supplies and allows people to be more free with what they want to do. Once they have gotten used to the feeling of just being free to do whatever they please then they can start formal training. I honestly wish that this is the way they would teach because when I first started learning formally it was strictly “do this, do that” exercises that didn’t capture my attention very well and weren’t explained very thoroughly as to why we were doing such exercises in the first place as well as why it was beneficial. I agree with the idea that if you present complex software such as Photoshop and say here is this tool, that tool, etc. etc. it can be completely overwhelming, but if you just set someone down and tell them to click on the brush tool and just doodle away I think that would be a better introduction to the world of drawing/painting and art in general than starting out by drawing lines/shapes because it allows the person to be themselves first and then learning the formalities afterwards.
